With football season upon us, different trivia questions are sure to pop up. One of the favorites is who was the first black NFL quarterback? Sometimes it is difficult to get a straight answer because it depends on who you ask.
Many people will say that Willie Thrower was the first NFL quarterback. In 1953, he played in one game for the Chicago Bears. The game was October 18, 1953 against the San Francisco 49's and was his one and only NFL game. Thrower relieved the current quarterback, George Blanda. He completed 3 of 8 passes for 27 yards. Unfortunately, the Bears lost the game. Prior to this, a black quarterback was unheard of in the professional ranks.

It would be another 18 years before Marlin Briscoe would star in the AFL as a quarterback. However, many people will say that he is the first black quarterback. Marlin "The Magician" Briscoe was originally drafted by the Denver Broncos as a defensive back but negotiated a three day trial at quarterback. Since he was only a 14th round draft pick, he definitely took the industry by surprise. He was put in during the third game of the 1968 season and did so well, he was named as the Broncos starter the very next week.
Regardless of who gets the title, both of these men were influential and crossing the color barriers in professional football. They are what shaped the NFL into what it is today. They are indeed legends of the game.
